Much like vaccines, fluoride in your water is a public health practice that has been taking heat from some quarters. A Google search turns up some pretty scary articles about fluoride in municipal water.
Why all of the alarm? According to the World Health Organization, excess levels of fluoride can cause problems, including stained teeth and stiff and painful joints. However, over consumption of fluoride is rare. Also according to the WHO, “Acute high-level exposure to fluoride is rare and usually due to accidental contamination of drinking-water or due to fires or explosions.”
Few Americans are ingesting the amounts of fluoride that can cause problems. In fact, many of us can benefit from receiving topical applications of fluoride at the dentist to help prevent cavities.
